Definite signs of aging on the face include crow’s feet, smile lines and frown lines. These dynamic wrinkles become much more pronounced when we make certain facial expressions. The contracting and relaxing of facial muscles cause the skin to become less taut, and the result is obvious wrinkling.
BOTOX® injections are a popular alternative to skin resurfacing, plumping, chemical peels and surgery. BOTOX® relaxes the facial muscles. This in no way restricts facial movements. The individual can still make normal facial expressions, but those annoying smile lines and crow’s feet are much less apparent. This has the potential to make a person look years younger.
How BOTOX® Works
BOTOX® was originally derived to work as a muscle relaxant and to prevent spasms. Today, its most common use is to help smooth out facial lines that appear when the skin is relaxed through muscle contractions. It is, therefore, considered a cosmetic facial treatment.
When BOTOX® is administered correctly, the result is smoother facial skin because the muscles remain relaxed. The individual can still smile and frown like normal, and the face is still sensitive to touch because only the nerves that control muscle movements are affected by the solution.
During a typical procedure, we look at the facial features and ask the client to make some expressions. This lets us see the location and degree of wrinkling. We choose the injection sites and skillfully inject the solution just below the skin.
The BOTOX® moves around a bit underneath the skin and then begins to affect the nerves that control facial muscles. The full effect of the treatment takes about three days or so. The results can last for up to six months. Each successive treatment uses less of the BOTOX® solution because the muscles are becoming trained to stay relaxed, which is a good thing.
BOTOX® is popular as a cosmetic treatment because it doesn’t require surgery, a consideration that is important to many individuals. Surgery is invasive and can yield results that are less than what the client expected. BOTOX® is also not a resurfacing procedure, meaning that it is suitable for all skin types.
